Dr. Kamran Massoumi

Doctor

Dr. Kamran Massoumi, MD, the respected ophthalmologist and leader of the Oklahoma Eye Institute and Omni Surgical Center in Lawton, Oklahoma, was born into a family entrenched in the medical and political spheres of Tehran, Iran, in 1967. His paternal grandfather was a notable political figure and military officer who also served as the Minister of Agriculture under the Shah of Iran. On his mother’s side, he comes from a lineage connected to Iranian royalty. However, his maternal grandfather notably pursued a career in medicine, becoming one of the first ophthalmologists in the country.

Influence of a Medical Pioneer

Kamran Massoumi's early life was profoundly influenced by his maternal grandfather, a revered figure in Iranian ophthalmology. His grandfather’s contributions were significant enough to draw the attention of Reza Shah Pahlavi, the then Shah of Iran, who requested his return to Iran to lead the development of the nation's first ophthalmology department. His efforts to combat the trachoma epidemic and perform pioneering corneal transplantations established him as the "Father of Ophthalmology in Iran." Inspired by such an impactful figure, he chose his career path by age five, aiming to emulate his grandfather's dedication to medicine.

A New Chapter in America

The Iran-Iraq War in 1983 marked a critical turning point for him. At 16, he, his mother, and his younger sister relocated to the United States, settling in Marin County, California. He quickly adapted to his new life, completing his education at Marin Catholic High School. He then attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he double majored in Medical Physics and Middle Eastern Studies. His academic excellence secured him a place at St. Louis University Medical School, where he earned his MD and distinguished himself in research. He completed his specialized training in ophthalmology at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Commitment to Western Oklahoma

Initially intending to return to California post-residency, Dr. Kamran Massoumi was instead drawn to an opportunity in Western Oklahoma, where there was a significant shortage of ophthalmologists. His decision to stay and contribute to the region marked the beginning of his long-term commitment to improving local eye care. He joined BVA in 2002, where he began his efforts to transform eye care practices in the area. His vision for better healthcare led to the establishment of the Oklahoma Eye Institute in 2014, where he introduced advanced technologies and broadened the scope of specialized services.

Improving Access to Eye Care

Recognizing the logistical challenges patients face in obtaining specialized surgical care, Dr. Kamran took significant steps to enhance healthcare accessibility. He founded the Omni Surgical Center in Lawton and established an office-based operating room in Elk City. These facilities have drastically reduced the travel burdens for patients needing surgical care and have brought high-level ophthalmological services closer to the community.

Family Life and Personal Endeavors

He met his wife, a native of St. Louis, while attending medical school. She holds an undergraduate degree from Creighton University and a master's degree in International Business from Webster University. Together, they have raised two daughters. Their eldest daughter is pursuing a dual graduate degree in law and healthcare management at the University of Oklahoma, and their youngest will be attending Oklahoma State University. The family shares a passion for martial arts, with all members achieving black belts in Taekwondo. Dr. Massoumi's interests include travel, particularly trips that allow him to learn about different cultures and participate in humanitarian efforts, such as his notable medical mission trip to Vietnam.

A Legacy of Service and Vision

A dedication to service and excellence characterizes Dr. Kamran Massoumi’s professional journey. His contributions to eye care in Western Oklahoma have enhanced the quality of local healthcare and ensured that residents have access to specialized treatments within their community. His ongoing projects aim to expand the services offered at his facilities and continue training the next generation of ophthalmologists.

Sustaining Community Healthcare

From the inspiring stories of his grandfathers to becoming a key figure in ophthalmology in Western Oklahoma, Dr. Kamran has lived a life of perseverance and dedication. His work focuses on providing high-quality eye care and ensuring the sustainability of healthcare services in the region.
